Hi! I’m Sára. I’m a ceramic artist based in London, originally from Slovakia.
My interest in ceramics began after I graduated from secondary school and spent 8 months in Denmark at the Bornholm Hosjkole. Inspired by the rough island nature, I explored handbuilding techniques, outdoor firings and various aspects of ceramics - and fell in love with the art form.
Once the course was over, I moved to London where I graduated from Theatre Design at UAL Wimbledon. Learning more about such an interdisciplinary creative pursuit gave me a foundation and understanding of woodworking, welding, working with textiles and combining these varied techniques and forms of craft across different media.
I collaborated with several theatre companies and got involved in large scale site-specific projects until 2020, when Covid hit and I had my first son at the same time.
After a while of focusing on my 2 young children, I was looking for a new direction and a fresh creative outlet - I rediscovered my passion for clay and joined a community studio in Peckham.
I feel like I am still at the beginning of my ceramics journey and learning a lot with each new piece. I like experimenting - using different kinds of clay and glazes, playing with textures, and integrating visual art in my work.
Inspiration often comes from the natural world, my theatre background and my family life. I draw on my knowledge of materials and aesthetics to build interesting and cohesive pieces that blend functionality and artistic expression.
I decided to name my brand little PINECONE to show both my connection to nature, and my actual name - in my native Slovak, my surname Šišková means pinecone!
